I have been asked so many times how I got started in Real Estate that I feel this is a great place to document it, so here it is.....
I grew-up in a household with parents who were both licensed Realtors. My father was licensed in 1969 and worked mostly in the summers along with his career as a Teacher. My Mother, Sarah (who most think is my wife or older sister) was licensed in 1979 and quit working at a bank to have more flexibility and vacation time; her career began in North Tustin, with Seven Gables. She had a passion for the business and became highly successful on her own. I was 14 years old back then, so I had a rare first-hand glimpse of the industry long before I ever entered the profession. While pursuing a degree in Business Finance, my parents convinced me to obtain a dual degree in Real Estate, along with my Broker's license for the future, (just in case I might need it), and I did. Even though I was an Entrepreneur and had small businesses before, during, and after college, I never considered entering residential real estate. A few years after college I was launching a business, and hit a crossroads with my partner when life happened....my grandfather passed away and my Mom needed to take a step-back from her business, and she asked for my help. (How can you say no to your mother, right?). I had done some part-time assistant work for her in the past, but this was baptism by fire; she had twelve escrows open at the time and asked me to handle it! She taught me a lot over the next few months by asking me to interact with other agents, manage the escrows and maintain her clientele. It didn't take long for me to see how little most agents knew about treating real estate sales as a business and providing high quality service. It seemed like everybody knew somebody with a license, but that's where the similarities between agents stopped.
I quickly recognized the vast differences between agents, and how much better it could be if ran like an honest business to earn people's trust. Many agents were good sales people, but I quickly saw the advantages associated with providing a higher level of service and professionalism through educating the client on the market and understanding the differentiation between what agents offered. Building relationships based on trust and integrity seemed obvious, but I saw too much of what the public feared about the profession. I vowed to keep my needs below my wants because that's where I saw agents compromise their ethics. As a competitive agent, I always wanted the deal, but never needed one. I believe in giving the same advice to clients as I would to my family; people know me as an honest straight-shooter. Even the best man in my wedding 25 years ago said my strong point was that I was blatantly honest, and no matter much it hurts, I will tell the truth and not pull any punches. I'm still that way and honesty and integrity are required from anybody who works for us.
In 1990, during a crashing real estate Market I started my business; I never knew what a good market was and within 3 years I was selling over 40 homes per year on my own; I discovered that the passion ran and continues to run in our family. My Mother and I were the top two individual agents at the Prudential office in 1993. I had proven to myself and peers that I could succeed on my own, and really felt that building a team was the future of Real Estate to run it as a business. In 1994 my mother and I formed a partnership to combine our talents; we knew as a team we are able to offer something unique to every client in every situation; more manpower, more expertise, different personalities, more experiences, etc. We branded ourselves The O’Dell Group in 1994 because we knew the long term vision was to have an administrative staff, personal marketing director, and Buyer's agents to allow us more time to focus our personal efforts on the clients and understanding the market. We did this more than a decade prior to seeing any other team use "Group" in their name; it’s flattering to see many of our competitors use it now. The advanced vision we had then, we still have today. We focus on forward thinking and are currently implementing strategies none of our competition is doing. Since combining forces, my Father, Sister and Wife all work for us full-time; it's truly become a family business!
Our Group members and I continually participate in training programs to improve the customer experience, and what we do to market homes. After all the years of consistently outselling the competition, the gap of our knowledge and expertise continues to grow. We are still many years ahead of our competition on how we market on the internet; how we service our properties; and how we run our business. Of the 16,000 agents in Orange County, we are consistently ranked in the top 25 in sales. What we've created to earn that ranking are the reasons why so few agents are able to compete with us and why we have retained an unequivocal market share in the communities we serve. The O'Dell Group is not only unique, but has become synonymous with successful outcomes for many hundreds of customers throughout the years. We analyze and dissect the marketplace to understand it better than anyone which yields consistent success for our clients. We will continue to innovate and improve our business practices, so as to lead our competition into the future. This is consistent with our Vision and making Your Best Interest The O'Dell Group's top priority. We know selling homes is about you and not us, and we won't compromise what to give the consumer; you deserve more than what you pay for.
